Briscoes and the Birth of Jazz

Neliska "Baby" Briscoe
Neliska "Baby" Briscoe
Briscoe Family

FYI, attached is an excerpt from an article about a lost jazz great who happened to be a "Briscoe". Her name was Neliska Ann "Baby" Brisco. She is the only "Briscoe " listed by name in Henry Louis Gates' African-American National Biography (http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~aanb/index.shtml). As far as I can surmise, her father Eddie Briscoe may have been Neville Briscoe's 1st cousin.

Speaking of lost "Briscoes", we are doing our Spring Roundup of Neville Briscoe's descendants.

Our point people in that effort are Ira Briscoe (Communications), Ann Marie Jean (History), the Family Branch Representatives (see below) and You. Since we are still casting some of the lead and supporting roles for family branch reps. we need your suggestions. Here's what we have so far. Branch reps will help the Communications and History committees get up to date with our folks. They will find someone in each family unit under their line who can reach out to siblings and parents. We can use all who will are willing to help.

Thanks
Rodney

Hello all,  I wanted to let you all know that my mother found the program from the 1st Neville Brisco family reunion in 1992 in a drawer in my old room today.  At the reunion a group called "Girl Tyme" perfomed.  At the time i was about 14 and getting ready to enter the 9th grade.  I got the girls in the group to sign my book, one of which that was signed  beyonce' K!  Yes that is short for beyonce knowles.... Somehow I wish i would have gotten her number!  Ever heard the term i dropped the ball?  Haha  There were several other girls in the group 5 or six don't remember for sure.  However I know that one of them is Tamar who went solo and did several collaborations with prince I've even seen her in concert several years ago at the warehouse live.  2 of the others are Lativia Roberson and Nina Taylor.  I just wanted to let yall know this piece of Briscoe family reunion history and to let people know if they did not already there is and will be greatness surrounding the Briscoe Family.

Hello,
I am the very 1st granddaughter of Neliska Ann Briscoe-Casimire, born to Neliska Mitchell-Briscoe in New Orleans (1914).  "Baby Briscoe", as she was "affectionately known during her days in show business, would have turned 101yrs old today. She was an AMAZING trailblazing "show biz" woman (google The Harlem Playgirls), wife, mother, grandmother (Gran-dear), entrepreneuer, & friend to many! The  "light of her life" will continue to have a profound empact on those she touched for eternity.

MLuv..

Regards,

Holly Howse  ref: Neliska Briscoe
